最近では、「ジェンダーフリー」という言葉を
頻繁に耳にするようになりましたが、
実は、英語で「Gender free」とは使いません。
（多分ですが。。。）
どちらかと言うとこちらの方が
一般的かと思われます。
ジェンダーフリー ⇒
gender-neutral /gender neutrality
gender-blind / gender-blindness
ジェンダーフリー：「従来の固定的な性別による役割分担にとらわれず、男女が平等に、自らの能力を生かして自由に行動・生活できること。」 コトバンクより
・Gender-neutral: (adj)
"not referring to either sex but only to people in general."
・Gender-neutrality: "Gender neutrality (adjective form: gender-neutral), also known as gender-neutralism or the gender neutrality movement, is the idea that policies, language, and other social institutions should avoid distinguishing roles according to people's sex or gender, in order to avoid discrimination arising from the impression that there are social roles for which one gender is more suited than another." wikipedia.com
・Gender-blind: (adj)
"not discriminating or distinguishing between different genders."
・Gender-blindness: "In education, business, law, and other fields, gender blindness or sex blindness is the practice of disregarding gender as a significant factor in interactions between people." wikipedia.com
先月の話ですが、
カリフォルニア州バークレー市では、
同市で使われている性別ベースの単語を
ジェンダーフリーな単語へ変更することを
正式に決定したそうです。
どういう事かと申しますと
例えば、日本人に一番わかりやすそうなのはこちら。
・manholes （マンホール） ⇒ maintenance holes （メインテナンス ホール）
・police man / police woman (ポリスマン/ポリスウーマン） ⇒ police officer（ポリスオフィサー）
・men and women （男性と女性）⇒ people
・brother （兄/弟） / sister（姉/妹） ⇒ sibling （きょうだい）
簡単に言えば、
男女の区別がはっきりわかる単語を避けて、
どちらでもない中性的な単語に変えようということのようです。
今回の決定には、
政治的/倫理的な背景があるかと思いますが、

「Leaders in the city of Berkeley voted this month to change about 40 gender-based words used in the city code. New, “gender-neutral” terms will appear instead. This means words like “manpower” will become “human effort” or “workforce.” And, pronouns like “she,” “her,” “he” and “him” will be replaced by “they” and “them.”」
意訳：
「カリフォルニア州バークレー市議会は、同市で使用されている
約40の性別ベースの単語を変更することを決定いたしました。 代わりに、新しく「ジェンダーフリー」な用語が採用されます。 これは、「manpower (マンパワー）」などの単語が「human effort」または[workforce」になることを意味します。また、「彼女」や「彼」などの代名詞は「彼ら」に置き換えられることになります。」
