「漢方薬」を英語で言ってみた

先日、

「漢方薬」を英語で何と言うのか?　とご質問をいただきました。

というワケで

ブログ読者の皆様と情報の共有をしたいと思います。

漢方薬「Chinese medicine /　Herbal remedies」

直訳すると、「Chinese medicine」になるかと思います。

ラス曰く、コミュニケーションの観点から考えると

「Herbal remedies 」と言った方が、

イメージが伝わりやすいでしょうとのことです。

「Herbal remedies / Herbal medicine」の日本語訳を調べると

ハーブ療法となっており、

漢方薬とは、ちょっと違う（？）印象を受けます。

更に調べてみると

「Herbal medicine」の概説は、こんな風に記されております。

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside conventional medicine. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control, along with advances in clinical research, show the value of herbal medicine in treating and preventing disease.

What is the history of herbal medicine?

Plants have been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous cultures (such as African and Native American) used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) in which herbal therapies were used. Researchers found that people in different parts of the world tended to use the same or similar plants for the same purposes.

上記（メリーランド大学メディカルセンター）のサイトによれば、

　「Herbal Medicine」の中に「Traditional Chinese medicine 」も

含まれると解釈されているようです。

しかし、日本漢方生薬製剤協会によれば、

漢方薬の原料は植物だけと限らないため、

「Japanese herbal medicine 」は適切ではないとされております。

ややこしい。。。

薬剤部の方々がおっしゃるには、

漢方薬とは、日本で独自に発展したお薬だそうです。

そのため、「Chinese medicine」だけですと

単純に中国の薬と誤解される可能性もありますので、

補足説明を付けると日本の漢方薬のイメージが

相手に伝わるのではないかと思います。

Kampo, traditional Japanese medicine, originated in China and is based on Chinese （herbal） medicine. Unlike Chinese （herbal）medicine, kampo is usually made by an extract agent. The system is practiced in Japan by both herbalists and practitioners of modern medicine.

こんな感じの説明はいかがでしょうか？

ご参考まで、日本漢方生薬製剤協会では

以下のように記されています。

漢方／Kampo

本来は日本の伝統医学である漢方医学あるいは漢方医学で用いる処方の意味。蘭方と対比で用いる場合もある。どの意味で用いるのかを考え、Kampo という言葉は単独で用いず、Kampo medicine、 Kampo formulation など語尾に適切な言葉をつけて誤解されないようにすること。なお、漢方医学の意味で用いる場合には、初出の際に「漢方医学」の項で示すような注釈を付けることが望ましい。

専門的なことはわかりませんが、

中国本場の漢方というと植物に限らず、動物の牙とか

トカゲの尻尾とかも使ってそうだし、

（ホントかいな？適当すぎる。）

中国の漢方と区別するためにも

補足説明は欠かせないような気がします。
