こんにちは。 NEXUS【ネクサス】Englishマンツーマン英会話よりネモトです。 本日は、日本語の「さぼる」についてお話をしたいと思います。 受講生から昨日教えて頂いたのですが、 「さぼる」という言葉は フランス語の「sabotage」からきているそうです。 そうなんだあ。と思わず感心。 どこからどうやってフランス語が日本に入ってきたのか なんとも興味深いお話です。 ご存じの方も多いかと思いますが、 じつは英語にも「sabotage」という単語があります。 「妨害（する）」という意味で使うことが多く、 （動詞又は名詞） 「さぼる」またはそれに近い意味で使われているケースは 聞いたことがありませんでした。 勝手な憶測ですが、 フランス語ではスペルが同じでも意味が英語と違うのでしょうか？ ご存じの方、コメントお願いいたします。 是非、教えてくださいね。 と言うわけで 英語では、どうなのか？ アメリカ人のラスに聞いてみました。 （彼はフランス語を知りません。） やはり、英語の「sabotage」には、 「さぼる」「怠ける」といった意味はないそうです。 [Sabotage] 1.(verb) deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something), especially for political or military advantage. 2.(noun)the action of sabotaging something. ＜英辞郎＞　http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=sabotage 【他動】 〈フランス語〉〔戦時中などに〕～に破壊工作を行う 〈フランス語〉～に妨害工作を行う 【名】 〈フランス語〉サボタージュ、妨害［破壊］工作◆経営者や戦時中の敵に損害を与えるために、工場などの建物や施設を故意に破壊すること。 〈フランス語〉〔意図的な〕妨害行為 英語に限っていうならば、 彼の推測では、 可能性として、[Sabotage]よりも[Insubordinate]の方が 意味が近いかもね。とのことでした。 ちなみに[Insubordinate]の意味は以下の通りです。 [Insubordinate] http://www.thefreedictionary.com/insubordinate Insubordinate implies failure or refusal to submit to the authority of a superior: Not submissive to authority; disobedient or rebellious. unruly.
