ややこしい!?「half」の使い方

前回「halves」と「halve」についてお話しましたが、「halves」は「half」の複数形、「halve」は half の動詞と学びました。

今日は「half」の正しい使い方についてお話したいと思います。

前回のブログも合わせてお読みいただくとよいかと存じます。

英会話を学んでいる方はもちろん英語系試験を受ける方は、「half」の使い方は覚えておくと非常に便利です。

とくにTOEICリスニングテストでは、「half」を使った時間の言い回しが頻繁に出てきます。

この機会に復習をかねて今一度確認してみましょう。

「half」の基本系は「半分」の意味であることは、多くの皆さんがご存知かと思います。

それを念頭に置いていただき、これからご紹介する様々な使い方をみて参りたいと思います。

意味：either of the two equal or almost equal parts that together make up a whole.

名詞として使われることの多い「half」ですが、形容詞として使われることも多く日本人の私たちには、ややこしい単語の一つです。

～名詞として使われているケース～

「a（冠詞）」がついているのは「half」は数えられる名詞として使われているためです。「half」の複数形「halves」が存在するのも納得ですね。

◆ a half　半分（1/2）

・ a half cup ＝ one half cup (1/2 カップ）

◆one and a half　１.５

・two and a half 　２.５

・five and a half　５.５

◆ a month and a half 　１ヶ月半

・three months and a half　３ヶ月半

・eight months and a half　８ヶ月半

◆ a year and a half 　１年半

・She is a year and a half old. (= 18 months)

◆ four and a half hours 4時間半

・I drove about four and a half hours from LA to get to Las Vegas.　(実話）

◆ the first half & the second half 前半＆後半　

＊スポーツでよく使われる言い回し。

・France played very well in the first half.

フランスは、前半とても良いプレーをした。

・Japan played very well in the second half.

日本は、後半とても良いプレーをした。

・In order to win the game, the team must play well for both halves.

試合に勝つためには、チームは前半/後半共に良いプレーをする必要があります。

～形容詞として使われているケース～

◆ one half 1/2

・one third 1/3

・one quarter 1/4

・one fifth 1/5

・ one half cup ＝ a half cup (1/2 カップ）

◆ half a month 半月

◆ half a year 半年　(= 6 months)

◆ half a dozen 6つ（１ダースの半分）

◆ half and half 　equal amounts of two different things（半分半分）

＊アメリカでは、half and half と呼ばれる50%牛乳50%生クリームの乳製品があります。コーヒーに入れたり料理に使用したりします。他の国にあるかは不明。

◆ half hour 30分

◆ half an hour 30分

・half hour = half an hour （30分）　

◆ half past　　　　.　〜時30分

・half past ten. （10:30 or 22:30）

・half past eight. （8:30 or 20:30)

・half past midnight. （夜中の12:30）

◆ half past every hour 毎時30分（1:30, 2:30, 3:30, etc )

◆ The glass is half-full. 楽観的

used to refer to an attitude of always thinking about the good things in a situation rather than the bad ones:

・Her glass is always half-full.　（彼女はいつも楽観的です）

◆ The glass is half-empty.　悲観的

used to refer to an attitude of always thinking about the bad things in a situation rather than the good ones:

・His glass is half-empty. （彼は悲観的だ）

◆ Better half 　配偶者(伴侶）

A person's better half is their husband or wife.

◆ Be half the battle 　半分勝ったも同然の状態 1. to be the most difficult part of a process so that once you have finished this part, you have almost succeeded: （最も困難/重要な部分(プロセス)であるため、この部分が終われば、ほぼ成功する）

2.to be a difficult or important part of what you have to do　

（あなたがしなければならない困難または重要な部分）

3.used to say that when you have done the most difficult part of an activity, the rest is easy

（最も困難な箇所/部分が終われば、残りは簡単）

・For a lot of jobs, getting an interview is half the battle.

・Knowing is half the battle. (understanding something is an important part being able to do it.)
